Fun and Loud Drum Lessons for Kids
Starting with a Simple Practice Pad
Many parents are afraid to start their kids on drums because they think it will be too loud or too expensive. But you don't need a giant set of drums to get started! In our classes, we often start new students with a "practice pad." This is a small, heavy piece of rubber that sits on a table. It feels like a drum when you hit it with a stick, but it only makes a quiet "tap" sound. This is perfect for learning how to hold your drumsticks and how to hit with a steady beat. It also costs much less than a full drum kit. You can also buy a pair of drumsticks for a very low price. We teach our students how to hold the sticks loosely so they don't hurt their hands. Once they learn the basic rhythms on the pad, they will be much better when they finally sit down at a real drum set. At Healing Music Seeds, we make sure every student gets the basics down first.
Learning the Basics of Rhythm and Beat
Drumming is the heartbeat of music. In our Sacramento lessons, we spend a lot of time talking about "the beat." We use our feet to tap along while our hands play different patterns. This is called coordination, and it is like a workout for the brain! We teach kids how to count "one, two, three, four" so they can play along with their favorite songs. We also show them how to play quietly and how to play loudly. Being a good drummer is not just about making noise; it is about knowing when to be loud and when to be soft. Our teachers are very patient as kids learn to use their hands and feet at the same time.
How to Keep Practice Exciting
The best part about drums is that you can play along to almost any music. We encourage our students to put on their favorite songs and try to find the beat. They can tap on their practice pad or even on a pillow! Pillows are great because they don't bounce back, so the arm muscles have to work even harder. You can help your child by having a "rhythm parade" around the house. Use spoons or plastic bowls to make different sounds. This shows them that music is everywhere. At Healing Music Seeds, we want our students to feel like rock stars. We celebrate when they master a new beat or finish a difficult page in their book. Even if they make a mistake, we tell them to keep the beat going. In drumming, the most important thing is to never stop the rhythm! We love seeing the big smiles on our Natomas students' faces when they finally "get" a tricky pattern.
